Why do some spirits taste sweet without any added sugar?

The answer is often the barrel. As a spirit ages, it pulls compounds from the charred oak that can create flavors like wood sugar, vanilla, caramel, honey, and maple. Your brain naturally associates those flavors with sweetness, even when there's little to no sugar left in the spirit. It's one of the reasons a well-aged whiskey can taste rich and sweet while remaining completely unsweetened. The next time you pick up notes of caramel or honey in your glass, thank the barrel!

Inspired by the legendary 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet that gave our coastline its name, Treasure Fleet Gold Rum and Treasure Fleet Silver Rum pay tribute to the history waiting just offshore.
